Gary Hill, artiste américain né en 1951, est aujourd'hui internationalement reconnu pour ses bandes et installations vidéos, qui ont été célébrées à l'occasion de nombreuses expositions personnelles, telles celles du Centre George Pompidou à Paris (1993), le Guggenheim Museum à Soho, NY (1995), le Whitney Museum de New York (1998), le Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (1998) ou encore le Aarhus Kunstmuseum au Danemark (1999).

Il a également reçu le Lion d'Or de la Sculpture à la Biennale de Venise en 1995.

De façon plus récente, il développe un travail de performance, en collaboration avec diverses personnalités : la chorégraphe Meg Stuart « Splayed Mind Out » (1996-98), les poètes George Quasha et Charles Stein, et aussi Paulina Wallenberg-Olsson.

Les ?uvres de Gary Hill mettent le spectateur au centre de leur dispositif. Nombre d'entre elles n'existent que par sa présence (Tall Ships, Withershins¼), d'autres le mettent à l'épreuve à travers une perception corporelle intense (Midnight Crossing, Dervish, Core Series : Glasses, Viewer, HanD HearD ¼).

Le corps est très présent dans ses ?uvres, éprouvé (Crux, HanD HearD), fragmenté (Inasmuch as it is always already taking place). Il est la voie d'accès au processus mental. A travers des dispositifs très variés, Gary Hill produit des représentations d'actes de langage qui tentent de produire du sens. Il s'interroge sur la « physicalité du langage », explorant les réseaux fort complexes qu'entretiennent les mots et les images.
