Alpenglow is a series made using a collection of personal photographs from the 1930's.
These photographs, in black and white, have been retained in their original format (6 x 6 cm) and are laid out flat. On each one, an element in the foreground - a figure, an object - is cut out then raised up vertically, so that it stands out in relief from the rest of the image.
The photograph thus becomes a miniature theatre. By its presence - etymologically, that which is in front - the cut-out element acts as an obstacle to the gaze. It makes us want to get past or round it, so we can see what is hidden on the other side. Like a little tin can whose lid has been peeled up, the open photograph invites us to look inside.
It leaves a white, emptied space, a figure of absence. A space that we might slip into, where we could take refuge. A space that is white, the colour of everything, which contains in itself all the colours of the prism, a space of possibilities.
Alpenglow invites us to see the spectacle of the invisible, as well as the field of possibilities.
