"While dummies and model planes provide practical skills, blackboards convey theoretical knowledge. The formula and words written on them put abstract ideas in concrete forms and make it possible to talk about them independent from context. The scribbles, circles, and lines, however, stem from very specific situations which, to the outsider, are no longer intelligible. We can only speculate about their meaning. The same accounts for the photographs themselves: as pieces of reality, it is up to us to imagine what happened. This uncertainty and interpretational openness are a leitmotiv in Lynne Cohen’s work."
